Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - After falling behind early and coming back to tie the game, the Tri-City Storm (11-12-2) fell short to the Waterloo Black Hawks (16-8-0) on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center by a final score of 4-3.
Storm defenseman Nolan Gluchowski scored his third and fourth goals of the season, keeping Tri-City in the game. Forward Grant Opperman also scored in the game for the Storm, registering his third goal of the season.
Waterloo came out and took an early lead on their first shot of the game as Mike Huntebrinker beat Storm goalie Johan Mattsson just 22 seconds in to make it 1-0.
Later in the first, the Black Hawks made it 2-0 when they got a power play goal from Justin Kloos.
But the Storm came out in the second period determined to get back in the game. After Huntebrinker went off for tripping 17 seconds into the middle frame, the Tri-City power play went to work.
Using a screen in front of goaltender Eamon McAdam set up by Tim Lappin, Gluchowski found space and unleashed a shot into the bottom right corner of the Waterloo net. Assists on the goal went to both Lappin and Jared Linnell.
Tri-City tied the game at 5:59 of the period when Opperman got the Storm's second man-advantage goal of the night. Trevor Mingoia found Trevor Moore down low in the Waterloo zone and Moore quickly moved the puck over to Opperman who hit the back of the net with his shot, tying the game at 2-2.
The game was deadlocked headed into the third, but Jake Horton broke the tie 1:31 into the final frame, giving Waterloo a 3-2 lead.
The Storm responded quickly as Gluchowski got his second strike of the game. The defenseman kept the puck in the Waterloo zone on a clearing attempt and quickly threw a shot at the net. He caught McAdam out of position and tied the game back up at 3-3.
The deciding goal was scored by the Black Hawks under three minutes after Gluchowski had re-tied the game when Ryan Papa found a loose rebound and wristed it past Mattsson.
The game-winner held up as Waterloo was able to fend off a desperate Storm team, who battled until the end.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night for a rematch at the Viaero Event Center. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
