Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Jump in January

After going 2-6-1 in the weeks leading up to, and just after, Christmas, the Waterloo Black Hawks enjoyed their best month of the season in January, posting a 7-3-1 record. Four of seven wins were on home ice, and the Hawks earned at least one standings point from six of eight games against USHL Eastern Division opponents. Individually, Brock Montpetit and J.T. Brown each scored eight goals. Montpetit also led the team in assists (nine), points (17), and plus-minus (+13) during the month. Brown, Tyler Barnes, and Derek Arnold all averaged at least a point-per-game. C.J. Motte and C.J. Groh were solid in net, each appearing in six games. Motte recorded a 5-0-0 record; his 2.51 goals-against average and 92.3% save percentage were both better than his season-long statistics. Groh also improved in those categories at 2.94 and 90.8%.

Vail Lifts Black Hawks

Judging from his on-ice exploits, Brady Vail enjoyed his return trip to Michigan. The former Compuware midget hockey player scored the first goal Friday night, unassisted, during the Hawks' visit to Team USA in Ann Arbor. He recorded his first power play point of the season Saturday, with a goal in the third period. In addition to his opportunity to appear on the power play, Vail skated with a variety of linemates, including many of the Hawks' top scorers, Saturday evening.

Double-Digit Dialogue

Team USA's ten-goal performance was the first time a Black Hawk opponent had reached double-digits this season and just the third time league-wide that a USHL club has recorded ten goals in a game this year. The last time Waterloo allowed as many opposing scores was an 11-0 defeat in Green Bay at the end of February 2009. The Hawks responded by winning their first seven games last March.
