SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced today they have acquired catcher Eddy Rodriguez from the El Paso Diablos in exchange for outfielder J.D. Reininger and relief pitcher Amad Stephens.

Rodriguez batted.264 with 8 homeruns and 42 RBI last year with the Diablos. He finished the year with a.325 on base percentage and a.403 slugging percentage. Defensively, Rodriguez recorded 483 putouts and a.970 fielding percentage last season.

Prior to joining the Diablos, Rodriguez spent three seasons playing in the Cincinnati Reds organization. The 24-year-old catcher has 200 hits in four years of professional baseball.

"We are very excited to add Eddy to our roster," said Canaries manager Steve Shirley. "He was one of the top catchers in the league last season and has an excellent arm. He will definitely slow down our opponents running game, plus he's a good hitter with a some pop to his bat," added Shirley.

A native of Cuba, Rodriguez was a top 100 prospect by Baseball America coming out of high school. He played collegiate ball at the University of Miami before turning pro in 2006.

Reininger batted.265 with five home runs and 39 RBI in 84 games last season with the Canaries. Stephens appeared in 15 games last year with the Canaries, going 1-0 with a 3.63 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched.

The Canaries open their fifth season of American Association play on May 13th when they host the defending American Association champion Lincoln Saltdogs.
