Waterloo Adds Prospects for 2009-2010

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks picked six players in the first four rounds of the USHL Entry Draft Wednesday, while making deals to further flesh out the 2009-2010 roster.

With the ninth overall pick in the first round, Waterloo selected Tyler Amburgey, a 6-1, 220-pound defenseman from Rowlette, Texas who played for the U.S. National Team Development Program the last two seasons.

The Hawks' traded their second round pick to Sioux Falls for defenseman Blake Thompson and forward Ryan Kesti, both veterans from the 2008-2009 season. Waterloo later sent defenseman Mike Montrose to the Tri City Storm in exchange for an extra pick in the third round.

The draft was completed in two phases. Each USHL team filled their protected list of veterans and draft picks up to 23 players. After each team had reached that mark, the selections continued until all of the clubs had 30 protected players. In all, the Black Hawks selected six defensemen, six forwards, and one goalie. Three players are from Texas, two from Canada, and one each from Michigan, Minnesota, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, North Dakota, and Illinois. During the next four months, the Black Hawks will narrow to a final roster of 23 through a series of try-out camps and preseason games.
