Evansville Otters News Release
Brian Burks scattered five hits over six innings, allowing one run as the Washington Wild Things beat the Evansville Otters 5-1, sweeping a three game series.
The Otters got on the board in the first inning when Cole Hilt singled home Steve Martin from third.
Washington came right back in the bottom half of the inning as they put their first three men on base, the last one being Chris Carter who drove home Matt Swope and Lance Koenig to make it 2-1 Wild Things.
The game would remain that way until the fourth when Andy Hudak homered to the opposite field to give Washington a 3-1 lead. The Wild Things put the game away with two runs in the sixth inning to make it 5-1.
Evansville had a chance to make it closer in the seventh. Steve Martin and Denver Stuckey led off the inning with singles and moved to second and third on a passed ball. On a 3-2 pitch, Brian McKenna hit a sinking liner to rightfield. The ball was caught Mike Arbinger, who threw home to nail Martin who was tagging from third. Martin tried to run over the catcher, but Pat O'Brien held the ball for the out.
The news got more frustrating for the Otters in the fifth inning as Chris Pillsbury (4-3) had to leave the game with an apparent back injury. Pillsbury had started to settle into the game, allowing just the homer to Hudak after the first inning. In 4.1 innings, Pillsbury walked none and struck out six.
The Otters now make the trip across the league to play the Mid-Missouri Mavericks for three games starting Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. East Division All-Star, Ben Foster (4-2) will start the first game of the series for the Otters.
