Rockford RiverHawks News Release

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Hawks and Kings played 11 total innings of baseball on Tuesday and each team came away with a win.

In part one of a doubleheader, the RiverHawks lost to Kalamazoo, 11-2, after completing a game that was suspended on Monday because of rain.

The Hawks and Kings were tied at 2-2 when the game was stopped in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday. Kalamazoo had already scored one run in the inning before play was halted and went on to score four more runs in the frame when play resumed.

The Kings added a run in the eighth on three straight hits and put up four runs in the ninth, two of them unearned.

After play resumed, the Hawks didn't advance a runner past second base and only had two hits off winning pitcher Brian Beuning (4-0).

John Richards (3-2) took the loss after throwing four innings Monday night, giving up four runs on four hits. Just one of the four runs were earned and only four of Kalamazoo's 11 runs were earned.

Game two on Tuesday was only a seven-inning affair, which the Hawks won 3-1. Kevin Crowley and Curt Borland combined on a two-hitter to snap Rockford's four-game losing streak and pick up the Hawks' first win in six tries at Kalamazoo this season.

With the game tied at 1-1, Brian Baron led off the seventh and final inning by getting hit with the last pitch thrown by Kalamazoo starter Justin Keeling (1-2). Jeremy Busch pinch-ran for Baron and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Sauls. After Ashley Farr flied out, Todd Dulaney and Doug Schutt hit back-to-back RBI singles to put Rockford on top 3-1.

Aaron McEachran singled in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games. The streak ties the RiverHawk record set by Ben Fjelland in 2002.

Borland (1-1) struck out all five batters he faced to pick up his first win as a Hawk. Crowley was handed a no-decision after going 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits.

Ryan Larson hit his second home run of the season in the third inning to give Rockford a 1-0 lead. The Kings got even in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit. Nick Rogers led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and stole third. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Brown.

The RiverHawks are back at Marinelli Field at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday to begin a six-game homestand, starting with a three-game series against Chillicothe.

The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
