Washington Scores First But Falls to Windy City

Crestwood, Ill. - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning Saturday against the Windy City Thunderbolts, but things went downhill from there for the visitors in a 10-2 loss.

Chris Sidick scored on a based-loaded walk by Wilson Matos to give the Wild Things an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Wild Things failed to capitalize on an opportunity for any more runs however, leaving the bases loaded.

In the next inning, the Thunderbolts tied the game and then took the lead for good. Mike Mooney scored from second when starting pitcher Matt Rossignol made a fielding error on a sacrifice by Mike Torres. A couple of batters later, Gilberto Mejia hit a two-out single to bring home Torres and put Windy City ahead.

Windy City added runs in the third and fifth innings. In the third, Zach Aakhus doubled and moved around the bases on a couple of fly balls by his teammates. Then in the fifth, Ryan Basham led off the inning with a double and scored on a JT Restko single, ending Rossignol‘s outing. After Quinn Bright took over the mound for the Wild Things, Mooney drove in Aakhus with an RBI out.

Denny Duron cut the lead to 5-2 in the seventh, hitting a lead-off solo homerun to put the game back within reach for Washington.

The Thunderbolts quickly ended any hopes Washington had of a comeback, scoring five runs off reliever Chris Bennett in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 10-2. Windy City's scoring was helped by an RBI triple by Restko and an RBI double by Torres.

Dustin Williams (7-3) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and nine strikeouts in the win for Windy City. Rossignol (0-3) gave up five runs, four earned, and seven hits in four innings in the loss.
