Washington Wild Things News Release
Crestwood, Ill. - A ninth-inning comeback attempt came up one run short as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell to the Windy City Thunderbolts 8-7 on Sunday night. One run in the eighth and two in the ninth helped the Wild Things cut the lead, but the tying run was left 90 feet away on the third to end the game.
For the second night in a row, the Wild Things took an early lead, but could not hold on for the win. Washington struck early in the second when John Delaney ripped his second home run of the season, and added to the lead the next inning as Chris Sidick doubled before stealing third. He would then score after an errant throw by Windy City catcher Mitch Saum.
The Thunderbolts would come right back in the fourth inning to tie the game when Brandon Anderson started off with a single. After a stolen base and error by Washington catcher Billy O' Conner, he hit third before scoring on a Gilberto Mejia single, cutting the lead in half. Mejia would then tie the game at two after a Zach Aahkus double.
The Wild Things fought back and took the lead again in the fifth after a two-out double by Wilson Matos scored Denny Duron and O' Conner. The lead was short-lived though, as Windy City tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, before blowing the game open in the seventh.
Always dependable reliever Kevin Hammons replaced Washington starter Justin Edwards, and quickly was knocked off his game. He walked the lead-off batter Saum before giving up a single to Nick Kuroczko. Hammons then hit two consecutive batters to load the bases and concede an easy run to the opposition. The Thunderbolts would score three more runs in the inning before they were done.
The Wild Things staged comeback attempts in both the eighth and ninth innings, though both came up short. They scored one run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by O' Conner scored Jared Dyer, but with the bases loaded squandered the opportunity to do more. Then in the ninth, they would come close to tying the game with a late rally when Sidick and Kourie both reached base and scored after hits from Matos and Eric Stephens. For Matos, it was his third RBI of the game. However, John Delaney would groundout with two runners in scoring position to end the game before the tying run could be scored.
Ryan Quigley earned the win for Windy City, as Washington starter Justin Edwards got the no decision. Hammons picked up the loss bringing his record to 5-4. Nick Hall also picked up his 15th save for the Thunderbolts.
The Wild Things will travel to Lake Erie for a three-game series with the Crushers beginning on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM. Season tickets for 2011, the Wild Things 10th season, are on sale now. Call the box office at 866-456-WILD for details.
