Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. -Gateway blasted Southern Illinois for the second straight night as the Miners suffered a 14-4 loss Sunday night at Rent One Park. It was the first time the Miners were swept at home since Windy City did it in June of 2008. Tim Clubb grabbed his fifth victory of the season, allowing just two runs over seven innings of work. Eric Fussell picked up his fourth loss of the year after making his first start since returning from the injured list earlier in the week. Tyler Heil had his second consecutive four-hit game, leading the 14 run, 14 hit explosion for Gateway. With the loss, the Miners record dropped to 60-30 in 2010, and 21-21 in the second half of the season.
Clubb was efficient Sunday night. After allowing two runs in the first inning, he allowed only an infield single in his final six innings. Clubb struck out three and walked three. With the win, Clubb improved his record to 8-5 on the season.
The Gateway offense was once again the story of the game. The Grizzlies have now outscored the Miners, 30-4, over the last two nights. Gordie Gronkowski had three hits and drove in two runs, while Matty Johnson added two hits, stole a base and scored three runs.
Fussell struggled with his command as he lasted one and two-thirds of an inning in the loss. He allowed seven runs, six of them earned, off three hits. He walked four batters and threw two wild pitches.
Monday the Miners will throw Ryan Bird (4-2, 3.00) against Evansville's Nick Sottung (6-2, 3.87) for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch at Rent One Park. Southern Illinois is 3-6 against the Otters this season and has dropped each of their first three series versus Evansville in 2010.
