Grizzlies Hammer Miners Again for 5th Straight Win

MARION, Ill.- For the second straight night, the Gateway Grizzlies hung double-digits on the West Division Champions, defeating the Southern Illinois Miners 14-4 to sweep the three-game series at Rent One Park.

The Grizzlies (50-38) has now won five consecutive games and seven of their last nine. They are a season-high 12 games over the .500 mark. Gateway finished the road portion of the schedule 25-19. Despite Sunday's win, the Grizzlies remained 1 1/2 games behind River City for the final wild card playoff spot. Both teams have six games remaining, all at home.

A night after scoring 16 runs on 19 hits, the Grizzlies pounded out 14 hits Sunday. Gateway scored twice in the first inning, before rain forced a 37-minute delay. The Grizzlies went on to score two more in the inning and led 4-0 after an inning. Gateway scored all 14 runs in the first five innings.

Tyler Heil led the way for the Grizzlies Sunday. Heil was 4 for 6 Sunday with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Heil finished the series 10 for 16 (.625) with seven RBIs. Gordie Gronkowski was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Charlie Lisk was 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Logan Parker also drove in two runs and was 1 for 4.

Tim Clubb (8-5) earned the win Sunday. Clubb allowed two, unearned runs, on three hits over seven innings. He struck out three.

The Miners (60-30), who claimed their first-ever division title Thursday night, finished the three-game series with just six total runs on 18 hits.

The Grizzlies begin the final regular season home stand Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark. First pitch against the Florence Freedom is set for 6:35 pm.
