Lake Erie Crushers News Release

AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, were undone by a five-run second inning at Sprenger Health Care Stadium on Thursday night, as they fell in the rubber match of their three game series to the Washington Wild Things, 5-2.

The loss for the Crushers (14-22) was their seventh in their last eight games, while the victory for the Wild Things (19-16) was their fourth in six games against the Crushers this season.

The Crushers fired the first shot for the second night in a row. Jordan Dean put the Crushers on the board in the bottom of the first inning by belting a solo homer over the wall in left, his seventh of the season.

Washington answered in a big way in the top of the second, where they sent all nine batters to the plate, scoring five times on five hits. Hector Roa started the inning with a triple to the gap in left center field, and scored moments later on Mike Hill's RBI double to right center. Two batters later, Kyle Reese brought Hill home on a RBI single to right, before Rashad Brown smacked a two-run double to right center, and he scored the final run of the inning on Brailin Jackson's RBI groundout.

Lake Erie was able to get one of those back in the bottom of the third. Tanner Lubach was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on L.J. Kalawaia's bunt single. Parker Norris then drove Lubach home on a run scoring single to right field.

Unfortunately for the Crushers, they weren't able to put together any other threats offensively after that. Josh McAdams smashed a one out double down the line in left in the bottom of the fourth inning, but that turned out to be Lake Erie's last hit of the game.

Brian O'Keefe (1-2) scored the victory for the Wild Things. He retired the last 11 batters he faced, and allowed just a pair of runs on four hits while fanning nine over seven innings of work. Zach Strecker (7) earned his second save of the series after working a perfect ninth inning. Steve Hagen (3-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over five innings of work.

The Crushers will begin a three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at Sprenger Health Care Stadium on Friday night. Right-hander Jordan Kurokawa (2-1, 2.64) will make the start for the Crushers and the Beach Bums will counter with left-hander John Havird (3-1, 4.45). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
