Beach Bums' Comeback Falls Short against Joliet

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums'(16-19) brought the tying run to plate in the ninth, but ultimately fell to the Joliet Slammers(15-20) by a final score of 6-2.

Joliet got the scoring started in the middle game of this three game series, when Danny Zardon hit a solo home run to start the second inning. In the third, Edwin Gomez hit an RBI grounds-rule double and scored on a Melvin Rodriguez RBI single. Travis Bolin led off the fourth with a solo blast and Joliet led 4-0. In the bottom of the inning, Jeff DeBlieux started off by reaching second on a single and an error. He promptly stole third then scored when Will Kengor grounded out, getting the Beach Bums on the board.

After the scoreless fifth, Gomez hit his second RBI double of the game in the sixth, then, in the next inning, Bolin hit an RBI single, extending the Slammers lead to five. In the bottom of the ninth, with one out, John Montgomery hit his second homer in as many games. With two away, Nick Murphy doubled, Arby Fields was hit by a pitch, and Jeff DeBlieux walked, but the Beach Bums cold not convert that into any more runs.

Luis Cruz went gave up four walks and four hits, but just one run, in six innings to improve to 2-1 on the year. Bums' starter Augie Gallardo had an up-and-down start in falling to 3-2. He struck out five in 4 1/3 innings but gave up four runs on nine hits and a walk. Confesor Lara came in with the bases loaded in the ninth and got the final out with a strikeout for his eighth save of the season.

Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums and the Slammers conclude this week's series with the rubber game. John Havird will take the mound for the Beach Bums and Skylar Janisse gets the call for Joliet. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm EDT and Tom Willms will have the call starting at 6:45pm with the Budweiser pre-game show, on 101.9- The Bay.
