Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up a big sixth inning in what was a see-saw game, falling 8-4 to the Florence Freedom on Wednesday night at the Corn Crib.
Garrett Vail opened the scoring with a long two-run homer to left field in the second inning for the Freedom.
The CornBelters were handed a run in the third inning when Yeixon Ruiz took third on a Santiago Chirino single and scored on a throwing error to cut the Freedom lead to 2-1.
The Belters took a 3-2 lead in the fourth frame when Aaron Dudley led off with a double, went to third on a Jesus Solarzano base hit and narrowly beat the tag at home plate on a sacrifice fly to right field by Justin Fletcher. Solarzano scored on a two-out single up the middle by Craig Lepre.
Florence regained a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning with a two-out rally on singles by Austin Wobrock and Mike Morris with both coming home on a drive to right-center field by Daniel Fraga.
The Freedom extended their advantage in the sixth with two singles to lead off the frame and both scoring on a Collins Cuthrell sacrifice fly and a base hit by Jordan Brower for a 6-3 lead. Vail smashed his second home run of the game later in the frame, a two-run drive to left for an 8-3 advantage.
Normal sliced into the deficit in the sixth inning with a two-out rally as Fletcher walked and was plated by a Miguel Torres single to cut the Freedom lead to 8-4.
Cody Gray (6-1) worked seven innings for the win, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Charlie Gillies (2-3) threw five and one-third innings for the loss, surrendering seven runs (earned) on eight hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
