Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem Warthogs starting pitcher Carlos Torres (2-5) pitched five shutout innings to lead the Warthogs to a 2-1 win over the Salem Avalanche. The Warthogs (4-3) bullpen was able to make the strong start from Torres stand as Dewon Day closed out the game to collect his third save of the season. The Warthogs scored two runs in the fifth inning when Donny Lucy led off the inning with a single and scored on a Sean Smith double. Chris Amador added a two-out single to score Smith and put Winston-Salem up 2-0. The Salem Avalanche (3-4) scored their only run when Neil Sellers hit his first home run of the season off Matt Zaleski to cut the lead to 2-1. Warthogs relivers Jay Marshall, Fernando Hernandez and Day shutout the Avalanche the rest of the way to preserve the Warthogs win. Smith finished the night 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored to lead the Warthogs offense. Game two of the three game series will take place at 7 PM on Friday in Salem, Virginia. Taking the mound for Winston-Salem will be RHP Jack Egbert and he will face Avalanche RHP Chad Reineke. The game will be broadcast live on www.warthogs.com.
