THE HILLCATS...Open up a three-game series against their Northern Division rival, the Wilmington Blue Rocks, at Frawley Stadium in Delaware...Had their game against Myrtle Beach on Sunday suspended due to inclement weather with the score tied at 3 in the seventh inning (the game will resume on August 14th at Lynchburg City Stadium)...Have lost four consecutive games for the first time since the team dropped six consecutive decisions from 5/17-5/23...Are playing against a Northern Division team for the first time since May 31st (vs. Potomac)...
TRANSACTIONS: OF Nyjer Morgan (.303-0-22) and SS Brian Bixler (.303-5-33) were both promoted to Double-A Altoona after representing the Hillcats in the All-Star game on Tuesday...Morgan leads the Carolina League with 37 steals and was on pace to break Rajai Davis' club record of 55 swipes...Bixler's .402 on-base percentage and 46 runs scored were both the second highest total in the Carolina League...
TRANSACTIONS II: Filling the vacated spots on the 25-man active roster will be both SS Brent Lillibridge (see page 7) and INF Juan Tejada (see page 10)...Lillibridge was hitting .299-11-43 with Low-A Hickory...INF Juan Tejada began the season in the New Yorks Mets organization with Triple-A Norfolk and hit .217-2-16...
ALL-STAR GAME: The Carolina League defeated the California League 6-3 on Tuesday night at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium...Frederick Keys OF Nolan Reimold garnered MVP honor's by going 2-for- 3... INF Brian Bixler went 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored while OF Nyjer Morgan was hitless in three at-bats while batting lead-off for the Carolina League...The California League has never defeated the Carolina League on East Coast soil...
FUTURES GAME: Hillcats C Neil Walker was named to the 2006 Futures Game roster last week...The game will take place on July 9th at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and will be broadcast live on ESPN2 (7 inning contest)...Walker grew up in Gibsonia, PA (approximately 20 minutes north of Pittsburgh) and was selected with the11th overall selection in the 2004 June amateur draft...Walker will be joined by Pirates' farmhand LHP Tom Gorzelanny on the US roster...
SCORELESS: LHP Greg Martin went 2.0 scoreless innings on Friday to extend his scoreless innings streak to 21.0 innings (see graphic below)...It is the longest streak since Sean Burnett's franchise record 32.1 scoreless innings streak in 2002...The longest scoreless innings streak in CL history is 42 innings...
ON THE D.L.: RHP Felipe Garcia (arm) has been inactive since 6/15...RHP Clayton Hamilton (oblique) has not appeared since 6/14...OF Antonio Sucre (ankle)...
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Gary Galvez, 22, is a 6-2, 200-pound right-hander signed by Boston as a free agent in 2003. The Cuban native went 10-4 with a 3.35 ERA in 31 outings (126.1 ip, 118 h, 64 r, 47 er, 40 bb, 87 k) for Greenville (A, SAL). Interestingly, he went 5-0 with a 2.37 ERA as a reliever as opposed to 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA in 18 starts. He combined with Jesus Delgado and Kyle Jackson on a rare no-hitter loss against Savannah on May 19th of last season. Galvez, the ace of Cuba's national team before he defected from Cuba in August of 2002, was pursued by a number of teams before signing with Boston as an 18-year old. According to Boston General Manager Theo Epstein, he would have been a first round selection if was eligible for the amateur draft.
