Winston-Salem Dash News Release
SALEM, VA - The Winston-Salem Warthogs wasted a five-run lead, but bounced back to grab an 11-8 victory over Salem on Monday at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field. The Warthogs saw a 7-2 lead evaporate into a tie game before plating four runs in the final three innings to win the marathon contest that witnessed the teams combine for 27 hits and 8 pitchers.
Wander Perez (1-0), who was recently promoted from Low-A Kannapolis and joined the Warthogs earlier in the afternoon, earned the win after holding Salem to a hit in 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief. He was aided by John Shelby III, who went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI. Estee Harris and Salvador Sanchez each collected 2 hits and 2 RBI in helping Winston-Salem match their largest run total of the season.
The Warthogs manufactured a run against Sergio Severino to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Paulo Orlando walked to start the game, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Shelby III brought Orlando across the plate with a sacrifice fly.
Salem wasted little time in tying the game in the bottom of the first with there own small ball. Jordan Parraz led off with a walk and stole second and third. Mark Ori drove him in with a single to knot the game at one.
Another Shelby III RBI sacrifice fly in the third inning scored Orlando to give Winston-Salem a 2-1 lead. The Warthogs added three more runs against Severino in the fourth inning as C.J. Lang and C.J. Retherford tallied run-scoring doubles and Orlando chipped in with an RBI sacrifice fly to give Winston-Salem a 5-1 advantage.
After Collin DeLome lifted a solo home run in the fourth inning for Salem, the Warthogs came back with a pair of runs against Avalanche reliever Joel Santo. Harris and Sanchez went back-to-back with run-scoring extra-base hits to give Winston-Salem a 7-2 cushion.
Salem would not go down quietly as Ori and Koby Clemons smacked RBI singles in the fifth inning to trim the Warthogs lead to 7-4. The Avalanche completed the comeback when Cesar Quintero blasted a two-run home run off Matt Long in the sixth to tie the game at seven.
Winston-Salem bounced right back as Shelby III and Greg Paiml put the Warthogs in front 9-7 with RBI doubles in the seventh inning. Two more runs in the ninth inning for Winston-Salem were more than enough offense to secure the victory. The Warthogs have a chance for their first road sweep of the season in the finale tomorrow night.
These two clubs will end their three-game series on Tuesday night at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field. The Warthogs will send RHP John Ely (3-7, 3.94) to the mound, while the Avalanche will counter with LHP Douglas Arguello (4-2, 2.68). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
