Avs fall in opener

Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, came back from 7-2 down to tie Monday night but fell to visiting Winston-Salem 11-8 on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. John Shelby III's RBI double in the seventh broke the deadlock for Winston-Salem (7-4) against Salem (4-8).

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Avs doubled their score with one swing against Warthog starter Matt Long. Collin DeLome belted an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left to make the score 5-2.

After Winston-Salem scored two in the fifth on back-to-back-to-back hits to open Joel Santo's outing, the Avs recouped their loss in the home half. With two out and Cesar Quintero at second, Mark Ori levied an RBI single to left against Matt Long. After Ori advanced to second on the throw, the designated hitter scored on an RBI single from Koby Clemens.

The Avs finished the comeback in the sixth. Collin DeLome scored the fifth run of the game for Salem on a Jhon Florentino single. Two batters later, Cesar Quintero blasted a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw to even the score at seven.

Winston-Salem, though, still held some offensive cards. Against new pitcher David Qualben in the seventh, Brandon Allen singled to right and came home on John Shelby III's RBI double. Three batters later, Greg Paiml's double to left against Raymar Diaz scored Shelby and made the lead two.

The teams traded blows in the ninth as Winston-Salem scored twice and the Avs once, but Salem could not plate the equalizer.

In the game, the sides combined for 19 runs and 27 hits while 13 separate players scored runs. For the Avs, Mark Ori posted his sixth three-hit game.

The Avalanche tries to take the finale from the Warthogs at 7:07 PM Tuesday with lety Douglas Arguello on the bump for Salem and righty John Ely scheduled to throw for Wnston-Salem .
