Potomac Nationals News Release
KINSTON, N.C.- Edgardo Baez, Leonard Davis, and Bill Rhinehart were significant contributors to the Potomac Nationals offense, accounting for 28 home runs and 93 RBI between them. Even though the trio was in the starting line-up for Double-A Harrisburg on Monday night, that did not stop the P-Nats from posting a season-high 17 runs and matching highs in home runs and margin of victory in a 17-3 romp over the Kinston Indians.
Without one of the Carolina League's leading home run hitters in Davis and run producers in Baez, the P-Nat offense did not miss a beat.
With a run in on a Dee Brown RBI single and a pair of runners on base, Marvin Lowrance hit a two-out, three run homer just the right of center field boosting the Nationals to a 4-0 lead in the very first inning.
Potomac added another run in the top of the second as Trevor Lawhorn, playing just 30 minutes from where he stared at East Carolina University, knocked a leadoff double down the left field line. Two batters later, Francisco Plasencia drove him in with a single to center making it 5-0.
After seeing Kinston plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, the Nationals answered back in the third. With Brown aboard on a Carlos Rivero error, Lowrance hit his second home run of the night, a two-run bomb, again to the right of center field, giving the P-Nats a 7-2 advantage. Lawhorn continued his homecoming celebration two batters later by belting a solo homer to left-center field increasing the lead to 8-2.
The game turned into a laugher in the top of the fourth as Potomac sent a season-high 13 batters to plate in a nine-run frame. Brian Finegan and Michael Martinez each had three-run homers in the inning to put the cap on a five-home run night.
Joe Norrito (6-1) followed starter Luis Atilano by allowing one unearned run in 3 2/3 innings to earn the win.
The victory was the 50th of the season for the P-Nats, a feat that took until August 2 to reach a season ago. It also moved Potomac into a tie with Kinston for the best second-half record in the league at 8-3.
The Potomac Nationals will go for the series win against the Kinston Indians Tuesday night. Left-hander Justin Jones (2-1) will get the nod for the P-Nats in the rubber match against K-Tribe right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (2-6). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
