Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Sergio Miranda delivered the game winning hit as Winston-Salem walked-off with a 1-0 win over Myrtle Beach on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs have won 9 of their last 10 games and lowered their magic number to clinch the second half playoff berth to 7.

Winston-Salem began the rally in the scoreless game against Pelicans reliever Cory Gearrin. Brett Bonvechio reached on a walk to leadoff the bottom of the 11th. Pinch-runner Billy Killian replaced Bonvechio and advanced to second when Greg Paiml followed with a bunt single. Next, Francisco Hernandez dropped a sac bunt that moved Killian to third as Paiml was forced out at second on the play. With one out and runners on the corners, Miranda swatted an attempted pitch-out to the track in left field to plate the winning run.

The Warthogs improved their record in extra-inning contests to a league-best 10-2 and moved 2.5 games ahead of Kinston, who dropped a 3-2 decision to Wilmington in 12 innings. Matt Zaleski (6-2) worked the final two scoreless innings to garner the win in relief. Winston-Salem also received a stellar outing from Michael Dubee who tossed three hitless innings to keep the game scoreless.

Warthogs starting pitcher Matt Long tossed six shutout innings and limited the Pelicans to two hits with four strikeouts. He was equaled by Pelicans hurlers Ryne Reynoso, Jeff Lyman and Tyler Wilson, who combined to throw nine scoreless frames.

These two clubs conclude this three-game series on Saturday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs will hand the ball to RHP John Ely (8-12, 4.59), while the Pelicans are expected to start LHP Carlos Rivas (5-3, 4.40). The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
