Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Winston-Salem - The Winston-Salem Warthogs plated the game's only run in the bottom of the 11th inning, taking game two from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in walk-off fashion, 1-0, on Friday night at Ernie Shore Field.
Pitching dominated game two early, as the Pelicans mustered just an infield-single against Hogs' starter Matt Long through five innings. Ryne Reynoso worked through a tough two innings scoreless and Jeff Lyman relieved him after his pitch count expired and worked scoreless through the fifth.
Long conceded a one-out double to Eric Campbell in the sixth, but again the Pelicans couldn't advance him, as long worked scoreless through six innings. Campbell's doubled did interupt a 10-batter string of consecutive outs recorded by Long.
Lyman strung together nine consecutive outs himself, to get through the sixth inning, and the ballgame continued scoreless into the seventh inning.
Long departed the ballgame after six scoreless innings, having conceded no runs on just two hits while walking none and striking out four. Lyman completed four outstanding innings of relief, holding the Warthogs at bay on one hit while striking out six. Michael Dubee entered in relief in the seventh and worked three more scoreless innings. Tyler Wilson came on for Lyman and kept the Hogs off-balance for three innings, forcing the ballgame to extra-innings, while allowing just two hits and striking out five.
Cory Gearrin worked a scoreless 10th inning, but walked Brett Bonvechio to open the 11th. Billy Killian pinch-ran and advanced to second as Greg Paiml laid down a bunt-single. Francisco Hernandez followed with a sacrifice bunt that was taken to second base for an out, pushing Killian to third with the winning run. He came home on a single off the wall in left for Sergio Miranda to end the ballgame in walk-off fashion for Winston-Salem. Gearrin (2-1) took the loss for Myrtle Beach who has lost three straight games.
Matt Zaleski pitched two scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th to record the win, his sixth. The Warthogs also claimed their first series win of the season over the Pelicans and pulled within three games of the second half division lead.
The series will conclude Saturday night at Ernie Shore Field at 7 PM. LHP Carlos Rivas (5-3, 4.40) will make the start for Myrtle Beach against RHP John Ely (8-12, 4.59) for Winston-Salem.
