Frederick Keys News Release
A Pair of Salem Four-Run Innings Does-in Frederick
The Frederick Keys were unable to make it two wins in-a-row tonight, as they lose at the Salem Avalanche 10-5.
Frederick starter Pedro Beato struggled out of the gate. In the first, Colin DeLome hit a one-out double for Salem. Mark Ori followed that up with a walk. Tim Torres then stroked an RBI-single to give the Avalanche a 1-0 lead. With Ori on third, Koby Clemens lifted a sac fly to rightfield, extending the Salem lead to two.
Salem got to Beato again in the second inning. Cesar Quintero led off the inning with a single. A batter later, Roberto Mena laid down a bunt-single to put two on with one out. Jhon Florentino hit an RBI-double to make it a three-run lead. DeLome then stepped in and drilled a two-run triple. He scored on an Ori-sac fly. When it was all said and done, the Avalanche led 6-0.
Beato settled down after that. He tossed four more scoreless innings, but left after the sixth in position to get the loss.
On the other side, Avalanche starter Chad Wagler was impressive. Frederick finally touched him up in the sixth. With one out, Wagler surrendered a double to Justin Johnson. He scored on a Jason White base-knock, pulling the Keys to within five.
Frederick had their best rally of the night in the seventh. Chris Vinyard led off the inning with a double. Brandon Tripp then singled. Chris Amador hit an RBI-single, scoring Vinyard, and making it a 6-2 game. Wagler was pulled in favor of Jordan Powell, who struggled. Tripp and Amador were each able to move up a base on a pitch in the dirt that got by the catcher, Clemens. Billy Rowell then hit an RBI-single to make it a 6-3 ball game. The throw home was wild, allowing Rowell to move up to second. Paul Winterling then hit a two-run single to make it a one-run ball game.
Powell was pulled, and in came Raymar Diaz. He stopped the bleeding and got out of the inning with no more damage done.
Salem answered right back in the bottom half of the seventh. They sent ten batters to the plate, scoring four runs on four hits. All four of the runs were charged to Keys reliever Ryan Ouellette.
Frederick didn't have a second comeback attempt in them, as they dropped tonight's contest by a final of 10-5. Wagler got the win, improving to 4-4. Beato took the loss dropping to 4-9.
Game two of this three-game series will be played tomorrow evening at Salem. The Keys return to Frederick for their final series of the season, a four-game set against the Winston-Salem Warthogs, on Friday, August 29th. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
