Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - After being swept at home in three games by Kinston, the Frederick Keys were a welcome sight for Winston-Salem as the Warthogs defeated the Keys 8-2 on Tuesday night at Ernie Shore Field. Javier Castillo finished 2-for-2 with a HR and 3 RBI and Cole Armstrong went 2-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBI to lead the Warthogs, who improved to just 2-5 at home in the second half of the season.
The Warthogs took an early lead with a pair of runs in the second inning. After the first two batters were retired, Daron Roberts singled and scored as Javier Castillo blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead. Frederick got on the board in the third inning as a walk and a single put runners on the corners with two outs. As Jonathan Tucker took ball four, Warthogs catcher Armstrong tried to throw the runner out at second base, but tossed the ball into center field, which allowed Travis Brown to score from third base on the error cutting the Warthogs lead to 2-1.
The Keys tied the game in the sixth inning as Ryan Finan greeted Warthogs reliever John Lujan with a solo homerun to tie the game at two. Winston-Salem responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead back. David Cook hammered a two-run triple and Castillo followed with an RBI single to give the Warthogs to a 5-2 lead. Winston-Salem blew the game open in the seventh inning as Armstrong lifted a three-run home run off Keys reliever Chadd Blasko to extend the Warthogs lead to 8-2.
Garry Bakker, who was making his 2nd start of the season, held Frederick to just one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts in five innings, but did not factor in the decision. Lujan (2-3) worked 2 1/3 innings and gave up one run, but struck out four to pick up the win for the Warthogs. Keys starting pitcher Jason Berken (4-8) allowed five runs in six innings to take the loss for Frederick.
The Warthogs and Keys will celebrate Independence Day at Ernie Shore Field with game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM with Winston-Salem sending RHP Derek Rodriguez (8-2, 3.84) to the mound. Frederick will counter with RHP Brandon Erbe (5-2, 4.80).
