Wilmington, DE-The Salem Avalanche, Class AAdvanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, fell three runs shy in the series ender at Wilmington's Frawley Stadium Monday night. The Blue Rocks clinched a threegame sweep of Salem with a 74 victory.

For the third time this season, Wilmington righty Dan Cortes departed with the lead against the Avalanche. He allowed just two earned runs in six innings and twothirds Monday evening and grabbed his first victory of the season.

Wilmington first earned the lead with a leadoff solo home run in the second inning from Brad McCann against Sergio Perez.

Then, with two out in the fourth, the Blue Rocks jumped into the scoring column again. Brett Bigler reached on an error at shortstop and Marc Maddox singled. After Mario Lisson walked on four pitches, McCann whacked a ball to right field that scored both Bigler and Maddox. Mario Lisson also scored as Ryan Reed juggled the ball.

Salem responded in the seventh inning with its first runs in more than two games. With two out, Orlando Rosales singled to left. Cesar Quintero plated him with a double into the left field corner. Wladimir Sutil and Osvaldo Fernando proceeded with backtoback singles to draw the Avs within one. The inning closed as Fernando was caught in a rundown between first and second.

Wilmington recaptured the three runs in the seventh, though, on an RBI single, basesloaded walk and wild pitch.

The Avs got three hits from Wladimir Sutil who finished the series 8for13. The rest of the team accumulated 14 hits in the first sweep of the Avs this season.

Best friends: After seeing each other just three times over the first two months and a week of the season, Lynchburg and Salem play their eighth game in 26 days tonight at City Stadium. Salem holds its biggest advantage against any team over the Hillcats by a total of 8- 2 in 10 games.

Runnin' on empty: The Avalanche scored its first run in the seventh inning yesterday, breaking a 19-frame scoreless streak. Salem scored 335 times in the first half, an average of 4.86 per game. Since the All-Star Break, the Avs have scored a mean of 3.33 times per game. 10 of Salem's composite 33 in the second half came across in one game, six days ago against Winston-Salem.

Blind date: Avalanche lefty Chris Salamida makes his first start against the Hillcats this season in his 15th appearance. He's tossed against Kinston, Myrtle Beach, Potomac and Winston-Salem three times apiece this year. All other Salem pitchers, omitting newcomer Matt Sweeney, have thrown to Hillcat batters this season.

I've been running hot: Avalanche starter Sergio Perez threw five innings and allowed one earned run yesterday. In the last 11 innings, Salem starters have allowed just that earned run.

Four telling: The Avalanche has dropped four games in a row for the third time in ‘07. Each of the first two times (4/14 @ Wilmington and 5/16 @ Winston-Salem), Salem has short-circuited the opponent in game five.

Seven come 11: Salem infielder Wladimir Sutil used a 3-for-5 yesterday evening to bump his hit streak to seven games. In that time, Sutil has hit .538 (14-26) with a double and seven runs batted in. He has also increased his season batting average by 38 points to .281. His season-high hit streak of ten games came between May 6th and 15th.

Upcoming Probables
