Lynchburg, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, climbed out of a 7-3 hole against Lynchburg Tuesday night at City Stadium to win 12-8 in the first of three with the Hillcats. Mitch Einertson provided four hits in his first four at-bats for Salem.
The Avs (3-8) trailed in the game 7-3 after Lynchburg (7-6) tapped starter Chris Salamida for three runs in the fourth inning. Salamida left after surrendering seven runs in three innings and a third.
Lynchburg starter Luis Valdez retired the first two Avs batters in the top of the fifth as Billy Hart and Wladimir Sutil both went out to shortstop. Then, Osvaldo Fernando singled to center field. Next, Mitch Einertson slammed a ball to right field that scored Fernando. Chris Johnson and Ryan Reed followed with base hits of their own and Einertson scored. With Valdez out of the game, Cesar Quintero blasted a two-run double to right against Ronald Belizario to make the score 7-7. The following batter, Orlando Rosales singled to right and Quintero snuck home for an 8-7 lead.
Lynchburg tied the game in the home half of the inning, but Salem reacted with a pair in the sixth. Billy Hart opened the frame with a bunt single. After Sutil sacrificed Hart to second, Osvaldo Fernando doubled to right to plate Hart. Mitch Einertson then singled to place runners at the corners. Chris Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Avs a two-run pad. Johnson added another RBI with a single in a two-run eighth.
Five separate Salem players closed the game with more than one hit. Einertson's four hits tied a career high that he set May 29th against Potomac. Eight of Salem's nine starters had either a run, RBI or both.
Salem has, thus, stopped a four-game losing streak. The Avs aim for a second victory in the series on Independence Day as righty Raymar Diaz faces lefty Kyle Bloom.
