Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - After making 50 roster moves during the first half of the season the Myrtle Beach Pelicans didn't have any player movement since June 15th. That two-week stretch proved only to be the calm before the storm however, as the Pelicans made nine moves Tuesday.

Moises Hernandez, Myrtle Beach's lone All-Star, received a promotion to Double-A Mississippi after posting a 10-3 record with a 3.66 ERA in 15 starts this season. His 10 wins are tied for the most in the Carolina League with Wilmington's Rowdy Hardy. Hernandez also became just the 11th pitcher in Pelicans franchise history to win 10 games in a season and is the first 10-game winner since Jake Stevens went 10-9 in 2005. Also leaving the Pelicans were pitchers Jang Ji Cho (1-1, 7.32 ERA), Jorge Acosta (1-2, 6.27 ERA), Chris Vines (0-3, 11.66 ERA) and Sergio Valenzuela (0-0, 6.88 ERA). Cho was transferred to extended spring training in Orlando with arm soreness, while Acosta, Vines and Valenzuela were all transferred to Rome.

To replace the departed Myrtle Beach received three young arms from A-Rome in Tommy Hanson, Kris Medlen, and Deunte Heath, along with a veteran reliever Tyler Bullock who returns to the roster after a stint in Mississippi.

Hanson, who entered this season listed as the #17 prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization, began the year in Rome and went 2-6 with a 2.59 ERA in 14 starts. He held opponents to a .194 batting average and struck out 90 batters in 73 innings of work this season. Hanson was signed by the Braves as a draft-and-follow pick in 2005 (22nd round) and spent last year with Danville.

Medlen joins the Pelicans after appearing in 17 games out of the bullpen with Rome this season. The right-hander from Santa Ana, California, went 0-1 with eight saves and a sparkling 0.87 ERA and held South Atlantic League hitters to a .169 batting average. In 20.2 innings he walked just three, while striking out 33. Medlen was selected by the Braves in the 10th round last year and spent the 2006 season with the D-Braves as well. He is listed as the #28 prospect within the Atlanta Braves organization.

Heath, a 19th-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves last year out of the University of Tennessee, went 2-3 with a 2.03 ERA in nine starts and seven relief appearances with Rome this season. This is his first professional season.

Bullock is back in Myrtle Beach for the third time this year. He was on the Opening Day roster and appeared in 14 games before moving up to Mississippi for two outings. He then returned to Myrtle Beach for one game before rejoining the M-Braves. All told he is 1-1 with one save and a 6.75 ERA in 15 relief outing for the Pelicans and 1-0 with a 7.36 ERA in nine games for Mississippi.

The Pelicans open a three-game series in Potomac at 7:35 p.m. tonight. The game broadcast begins at 7:15 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental Pre-Game Show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
