MYRTLE BEACH - Winston-Salem's late rally fell short in a 5-4 loss to Myrtle Beach (5-6) in the series opener on Monday night at BB&T Coastal Field. The Warthogs trailed 5-1, but managed three runs in the eighth inning to cut their deficit to one, but Pelicans closer Kevin Gunderson worked a perfect ninth inning to send Winston-Salem (3-4) to its third consecutive defeat.
The Warthogs were able to manufacture a run in the first inning against Myrtle Beach ace Tommy Hanson without registering a hit. With two outs, Salvador Sanchez was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. An error on a pickoff attempt moved Sanchez to third base. After a pitch hit Brandon Allen, Winston-Salem executed double steal with Allen taking second base and Sanchez scoring to put the Warthogs in front 1-0.
Myrtle Beach took advantage of a Warthogs miscue to take the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. With two outs and two runners on, Warthogs third baseman C.J. Retherford made an errant throw to first on a ground ball allowing the tying run to score and extending the inning. Next, Travis Jones lined a two-run double down the right field line to give the Pelicans a 3-1 advantage.
Myrtle Beach added a pair of runs in the seventh inning on an RBI triple by Gorkys Hernandez and a sacrifice fly by Jones to extend their lead to 5-1. The Warthogs collected RBI hits from Javier Colina, John Shelby III and an RBI groundout by Brandon Allen in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Hanson, who entered the game having limited opponents to one hit with 20 strikeouts in 11 shutout innings in his first tow outings, surrendered a run on three hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work to earn the win. Warthogs starting pitcher John Ely allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work to take the loss.
These same two teams will face off tomorrow night at BB&T Coastal Field with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Winston-Salem will hand the ball to Chicago White Sox top prospect and 2007 first round pick LHP Aaron Poreda (1-0, 1.80). Myrtle Beach will start RHP Duente Heath (1-0, 0.87).
