Wieters Named Player Of The Week

Frederick, MD - The Carolina League has named Frederick Keys Catcher Matt Wieters the 4/4-4/13 Player of the Week. The #1 prospect in the Baltimore Orioles organization according to Baseball America, Wieters hit two homeruns in his professional debut at Harry Grove Stadium on April 4th. The switch-hitting backstop finished his first week of minor league baseball with a .478 batting average, three homeruns, and seven runs batted in.

Baltimore selected Wieters with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft. The O's signed the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket just before the August 15th deadline. Wieters didn't play any baseball last summer. His only other professional experience came in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League.

Wieters and the 6-3 Keys will try to keep it rolling tonight, as the Salem Avalanche come to town for a three-game set. This is the first time the two clubs have met since Frederick defeated Salem in the Mills Cup Championship Series last fall.
