Frederick, MD-The Salem Avalanche, Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, scored three in the ninth Monday night at Harry Grove Stadium but could not plate the equalizer in a 5-4 Keys victory. Salem (6-4) hit a pair of home runs in the loss to Frederick (7-3).
The Avalanche trailed 5-1 at the outset of the eighth inning against Keys reliever Wilfrido Perez. Jordan Parraz smacked a 3-1 pitch over the left-field wall to make the score 5-2. After a strikeout, Greg Buchanan walked and Wladimir Sutil struck out. Then, Cesar Quintero slammed a two-run home run just left of center field to draw the Avs within one. Each longball was the first of the season for Parraz and Quintero
With one out in the ninth, Orlando Rosales bounced a J.P. Martinez pitch to second base. Miguel Abreu chucked the ball wide of first and Rosales reached second base. He moved to third on a ground ball from Jimmy Van Ostrand. Then, Jordan Parraz was hit by a pitch and Koby Clemens walked to bring Greg Buchanan to the plate. The second baseman grounded to second, though, to end the rally.
In the loss, Jordan Parraz went 2-for-3 with his 30th career home run. The Avs were stymied by starter Jake Arrieta who tossed five innings and two-thirds. He allowed just one run on two hits in his third career start.
Salem and Frederick play again Tuesday night at 7:00 when lefty Polin Trinidad faces right-hander Brad Bergesen.
