Warthogs Fall 4-3 To Wilmington In 13 Innings

WILMINGTON, DE - In a marathon game that lasted 13 innings, the Wilmington bullpen outlasted the relievers from Winston-Salem to win 4-3 in game one of a three-game series at Frawley Stadium. With runners on the corners and two outs, Miguel Vega slapped a single to right field off Matt Zaleski to give the Blue Rocks the walk-off victory in the bottom of the 13th inning.

After the starting pitchers controlled the early innings, the Warthogs bats came alive in the fourth innings when Victor Mercedes led off the inning with a single and David Cook followed with a two-run home run to put Winston-Salem ahead 2-0. Micah Schnurstein crushed a 3-2 fastball over the left field wall for back-to-back home runs giving the Warthogs a 3-0 lead. The Blue Rocks answered immediately in there half of the fourth inning when Kila Ka'aihue hit an RBI double and Brian McFall hit an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the Warthogs lead to 3-2.

Wilmington was able to tie the game in the fifth inning when Brett Bigler led off the inning with a double and came home to score on an RBI single by Jose Duarte. The Warthogs threatened in the ninth inning with runners on the corners with nobody out, but Blue Rocks reliever Gilbert De La Vara struck out three in a row to end the threat and the inning.

Warthogs starting pitcher Ryan Rodriguez made his first start of the season and tossed five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three, but he did not factor in the decision. Blue Rocks starter Patrick Green only lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on hits, but he did strikeout six. Zaleski (0-1) took the loss for the Warthogs, while David Humen (1-2) collected the win for Wilmington.

Game two of this three-game series will take on Saturday, April 28 at 6 PM at Frawley Stadium. The Warthogs will send RHP Kyle McCulloch (1-1, 3.15) to the mound and the Blue Rocks will counter with RHP Michael Penn (1-1, 3.21).
