Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans made things interesting with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Matt Swanson struck out Elvis Andrus with the tying run at third base and the potential winning run at first as Lynchburg escaped with a 4-3 win before 3,017 fans at Coastal Federal Field Friday night. The Hillcats climbed to within a game of the .500 mark at 8-9, while Myrtle Beach dropped to 10-11.

Andrus had a hand in the first two runs of the game, though not in the way he or Myrtle Beach would have liked. With one gone and the bases empty in the top of the third, Dan Schwartzbauer hit a bouncer to short that Andrus charged and had roll up his arm for an error. Pedro Powell followed with an RBI double to left as tricky winds helped the ball elude Roberto Alvarez, and Steven Pearce added another RBI double two batters later to put the Hillcats up 2-0. Both runs were unearned against Pelicans starter Jairo Cuevas.

Andrus atoned in the bottom of the inning by smoking an RBI double down the left field line to score Quentin Davis, but Lynchburg answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Both rallies began with two outs, as Shelby Ford kept the fifth alive with a triple down the right field line and Pearce followed with an RBI single to left to make it 3-1. Left-hander Adam Stanley relieved Cuevas in the sixth and recorded the first two outs on five pitches only to have Schwartzbauer single to center to keep the inning going. Schwartzbauer then stole second and scored on Ford's single to left.

It remained a 4-1 game until the ninth when Myrtle Beach squared off against Hillcats closer Swanson, who came in a perfect three-for-three in save opportunities on the season. Swanson walked Willie Cabrera to start the inning though, and followed that with another free pass to Clint Sammons to bring the potential tying run to the plate. Alvarez popped out, but Jose Camarena worked Swanson for another walk to load the bases. Derrick Arnold also popped up for the second out, but Davis knocked the first pitch he saw into right-center for a two-run single as Cabrera and Sammons both scored to make it 4-3 and Camarena raced to third. Andrus quickly fell behind in the count 0-2 however, and after fighting off some good pitches Swanson finally got a fastball past him to end the game.

Todd Redmond (1-2) was the winner for Lynchburg with five innings of one-run baseball. He allowed five hits and a walk while tying a season-high with five strikeouts. Cuevas (0-3) turned in a solid start and did well to limit the damage to three runs (one earned) in five innings of work. He gave up six hits and just one walk while recording six strikeouts. Swanson's save was his fourth. Davis led the offense with a 3-for-5 night, his team-leading seventh multi-hit game of the year. He, Andrus, and Mike Rozema went a combined 6-14 and drove in all three runs, but the final six spots in the order went a combined 2-20.
