Brandon, MB. -- It was anything but a successful homecoming for the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday night as they dropped an 8-4 decision to the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
After surrendering the game's opening goal in the first minute of play, the Warriors roared back with four straight goals before the end of the first and never looked back as they cruised to the win before over 4,000 fans at Westman Communications Group Place.
Friday's game was the first of back to back weekend home games for the Wheat Kings, who returned from a grueling 7-game, thirteen day west coast road trip earlier this week.
Right-wingerCody Beach scored twice and set up three others for the Warriors, who moved into a tie with Brandon and Saskatoon for second place in the WHL's Eastern Division.
Newly acquiredJustin Kirsch with two,Carter Hansen, Sam Fioretti, Tanner Eberle and Florida Panthers' first round draft choiceQuinton Howdenrounded out the scoring for the Warriors, who led 4-1 and 5-2 at the period breaks.
DefencemanRyan Pulock, Mark Stone, Michael Ferland and former Saskatoon BladeDarian Dziurzynski scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, who play host toDerek Laxdall's Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday night.
Stone, the WHL's scoring leader, finished the game with a goal and an assist to extend his league leading point scoring streak to fourteen games.
Dziurzynski was one of two new Wheat Kings making their Brandon debuts Friday night. The other was 19-year old netminderBrandon Anderson, who was making his fourth start for the Wheat Kings. Before being pulled in the third period, the Washington Capitals' prospect had given up seven goals on 34 shots.
Friday's game also spoiled the return of veteran Brandon defencemanBrodie Melnychuk, who was playing his first game of the year after suffering a wrist injury during the pre-season. The 20-year old Balgonie, Saskatchewan product finished the game without a point and a -3 on the night.
With the loss, Brandon's record slipped to 2-2-0-1 at home and 8-5-0-1 overall.
