Warriors Hunter Named World Junior Head Coach

Moose Jaw Warriors Head Coach Tim Hunter has been named Head Coach of Canada's National Junior Team for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships. With the announcement Hunter becomes the first Warriors Head Coach to achieve this accomplishment and is the first Head Coach from the East Division to have this role since Terry Simpson (Prince Albert) in 1986.

"This is a very special day for our hockey club with Tim Hunter being named Head Coach of Canada's National Junior Team," said Warriors General Manager Alan Millar. "On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff, players, and fans, I'd like to congratulate Tim on this special recognition."

"Tim earned this opportunity with his great work here in Moose Jaw. We're excited to watch him lead Canada in Vancouver and Victoria this Christmas," added Millar.

Hunter is entering his fifth season as Head Coach of the Warriors, last season he led the team to a regular season record of 52-15-2-3, they captured the franchise's first Scott Munro Memorial Trophy as the regular season champions and won their fourth East Division title.

Hunter has been Head Coach for the Warriors since 2014 and in 265 games on the bench he has a record of 145-94-19-5. He ranks 1st on the franchise's all-time win list and is 3rd all-time in games coached.

Hunter was an Assistant Coach on Hockey Canada's National Junior Team the last two years where they captured silver (2017) and gold (2018). He served as Head Coach of Team Canada at the 2015 World Under-18 Championships and won a bronze medal. He has coached more than 1,000 games over 14 seasons in the NHL as an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, and San Jose Sharks. As a player he played in 815 games over 16 season with the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and San Jose Sharks, and won the Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989.

Hunter will be in Kamloops, BC July 28 to August 4 for Hockey Canada's Sport Chek World Junior Showcase.

Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States will take part in the event which will feature 11 games in total and will be used by the teams to develop and evaluate prospective players as they prepare for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Vancouver and Victoria which will be held from December 26, 2018 to January 5, 2019.
