Warriors Focused Heading into Friday Showdown with Blazers
December 15, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Moose Jaw, SK - Focus will be a big key over the next two games for the Moose Jaw Warriors with the Christmas break looming.
The Warriors want to finish the first half of the 2023-24 Western Hockey League season on a high note after dropping the past four games.
"Any time we've lost four games in a row, your confidence is a little bit down, but for our group, we just need to get back to work," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said.
"When things are going well, when things aren't going well, you just continue to do hard, boring things and continue to do them over and over and over, and that's what we're doing and we'll get our confidence back."
The Warriors are coming off a 2-1 loss to Kelowna on Tuesday night which saw the team generate numerous scoring chances only to come up empty handed.
"It comes and goes throughout the year, but at the end of the day, we've been in the last four games since they're all one-goal games, so it's minor hiccups here and there," Warriors forward Atley Calvert said.
"At the end of the day, we had a couple of good days of practice and we'll be ready to go for Friday."
Moose Jaw will look to get back into the win column when they host the Kamloops Blazers on Friday.
Kamloops is also struggling coming in having lost its past six games and sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference with a 7-20-3-2 record this season.
This is the final game of their five-game road trip through the East Division.
"There's no easy matchups in this league, for us, it's just worrying about getting our game where it needs to be," O'Leary said. "Kamloops, they forecheck hard, they do things hard and fast and if we're not engaged to do the same, we're going to be in trouble."
Calvert said the Warriors will need to be locked in from the opening puck drop and stay focused throughout the next two games.
"Christmas is right around the corner, so for a lot of guys, it's a chance to go home and see their families, but we've got two games here before that, so make sure we stay present and keep taking it day-by-day," he said.
The Warriors and Blazers square off at 7 p.m. on Friday night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
Moose Jaw will finish the first half of the regular season on Saturday in Brandon.
