Wheat Kings Host Warriors on Teddy Bear Toss Night
December 15, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
There's one final game before the Christmas break for the Brandon Wheat Kings, and in many ways they've saved the best for last. Both on and off the ice, the battle with the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night promises to be a big one.
The Wheat Kings come in riding a six-game winning streak with five of those six games coming on home ice. Most recently, they got goals from six different scorers in a 6-3 win over the Kelowna Rockets on Wednesday, December 13.
"They've worked hard over this six game stretch and earned everything they've gotten, so they should feel good about their game," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "Now, you want to have confidence but you can't be ignorant. You have to understand what got us here, and it was a lot of hard work and a lot of detail in our game."
If the Wheat Kings need something to keep them invested in the moment, a quick glance at the standings will do it. Thanks to their recent winning streak, they've got an opportunity to go into the break in an extremely favorable position.
"We control our own destiny," Murray said. "We have the opportunity to go into the break in third place. That would be pretty good, considering the rough U.S. trip and that we went on an Alberta trip. We've gotten a couple of big ones out of the way that are tough on the schedule. It's a great opportunity for us to go into the break in third place."
Yesterday, the Wheat Kings announced they had recalled forward Jaxon Jacobson for the final game of the pre-Christmas schedule. While he's only just turned 15 years old, fans may be anticipating big things from him after his historic two-goal debut on December 8.
"He just need to be Jaxon and play the game the way he does," Murray said. "You can't expect a 15-year-old to score two goals a night, but we expect him to create. He's got a taste of league action now, so hopefully he's comfortable in that situation. He just needs to play his game. Players like that with high hockey IQ and ability to produce often find the scoresheet."
On a huge note for Wheat Kings fans, the game against the Warriors is also the Teddy Bear Toss game. Fans will throw teddy bears, toques, and mittens onto the ice when the first Wheat Kings goal is scored. It's a fun moment for the fans and players, and the coaches can enjoy it as well.
"The biggest nerve is you want to get a goal," said Murray with a chuckle. "The earlier you can score the better, obviously. We seem to be clicking offensively here a little bit as of late so hopefully we can get one in early."
