Warriors Fall to Reno

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors fell to the Reno Bighorns 100-96 Friday night.

Santa Cruz was led by Cameron Jones, who scored 19 points. Scott Machado scored 16 points, while Daniel Nwaelele had 15. In his debut with Santa Cruz, Joe Alexander logged a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards.

Reno's Brandon Heath led all scorers with 23 points and a game-high 10 assists. K.C. Rivers chipped in with 19 points off the bench, and Trent Lockett and Mo Charlo each scored 14.

The first quarter was tied three times, but the Bighorns held a two-point advantage to start the second period. Reno went on a 9-0 run in the second quarter to increase its lead to 14, holding a nine-point lead at halftime. The Warriors raced back and cut the deficit to one in the third quarter behind the play of Cameron Jones, who scored 15 of his 19 points in the period. Santa Cruz tied the game on a Joe Alexander tip shot with 8:27 left in the game and went ahead by four midway through the fourth quarter, but Reno responded by going on a 10-3 run and never relinquished the lead.

The Warriors held the edge on field goal percentage (45.3%-44.4%) and rebounds (48-38). The Bighorns had more assists (20-17) and steals (9-4), and committed fewer turnovers (11-22).

The Santa Cruz Warriors face the Bakersfield Jam tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente Arena for Hope Services Night Presented by Ocean Honda. The team will wear specialty jerseys featuring the Hope Services logo, which will be auctioned off during the game with all proceeds benefiting Hope.
