
Red Claws Hang on to Beat BayHawks

PORTLAND, Maine - The Maine Red Claws (12-14) defeated the Erie BayHawks (8-19) on Saturday night at the Portland Expo building, 108-103, to earn their second win in two days and fourth straight victory at home.
Former Red Claw and current BayHawk Micah Downs felt at home early on, finishing with 13 in the first quarter on 5-6 shooting from the field including 3-4 from the three. Vitor Faverani dominated for the Red Claws, recording nine points and seven rebounds in the first. Abdul Gaddy added eight points in the frame on 100% shooting, going 3-3 from the field and 1-1 from the three-point range. Chris Wright contributed seven points as the Claws held a 33-28 edge over Erie after one.
Frank Gaines came alive in the second quarter, scoring eight points off the bench for Maine. The Red Claws focused on defensive intensity during the quarter, out-rebounding the BayHawks 15-10 and holding Erie to .000 shooting from the beyond the arc. Scott Suggs and Terence Jennings scored six points each in the second. Maine entered halftime with a 59-48 lead.
Justin Brownlee came out hot in the third, scoring seven of his nine points in the early minutes of the quarter to spark a 10-3 run for Erie. Gaddy and Gaines added seven a piece to keep the Red Claws ahead, as they entered the final quarter leading the BayHawks 82-73.
Lewis Jackson paced a 16-4 run to start the fourth quarter for Erie, as they came back to gain their first lead of the night off of a Ricky Davis dunk with 8:32 remaining. Chris Wright led Maine through the final frame, adding 10 points and three clutch rebounds. A Faverani three put the Red Claws back on top at 95-94 with with 4:11 to go, and they held the lead through the remainder of the contest.
Micah Downs was the leading scorer for Erie, finishing with 20 points on the night. Lewis Jackson recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Other key contributors included CJ Leslie (19 points, 7 rebounds), Scott Suggs (10 points) and Terence Jennings (10 points, 7 rebounds).
Chris Wright and Frank Gaines led the way for Maine, scoring 23 a piece. Vitor Faverani dominated offensively and defensively in the contest, finishing with 20 points and 17 rebounds for a double-double to go along with a team-high six assists. Abdul Gaddy recorded a career-high 19 points and added seven rebounds, and Chris Babb added 12 points on 3-5 shooting three-point field goals and a perfect 3-3 from the charity stripe.
