Warriors Fall to ICE in Winnipeg
March 30, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors didn't get the result that they were looking for in Winnipeg on Tuesday night.
Winnipeg scored four times in the first 7:16 of the game and skated past Moose Jaw 8-1 at Wayne Fleming Arena.
"They're an opportunistic team and they make you pay when they get their chances," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said after the loss.
"A tough way to start the game, 24 seconds in and a goal down, that's definitely not what we were looking to get in the first minute of the game, but they're a good team and they're going to make you pay."
Calder Anderson had the lone goal for the Warriors on the night, scoring his fourth of the season, shorthanded, early in the third period.
Both teams came out of the gate flying, but a bad bounce led to Mike Milne opening the scoring just 24 seconds into the game on a goal that deflected off a Warrior and into the net.
Conor Geekie and Zach Benson scored just 25 seconds apart a few minutes later to give Winnipeg a 3-0 lead just 5:57 into the game.
Just over a minute later, Jack Finley found the back of the net to make it 4-0 after 20.
The Warriors pushed back to start the second period, but Winnipeg eventually broke through again as Milne scored with 6:14 left in the middle frame.
Owen Pederson made it 6-1 just over two minutes later.
Moose Jaw started the third period shorthanded, but was able to capitalize on a forced turnover by Brayden Yager, who then set up Anderson to break up the shutout.
Pederson would answer back 1:16 later and Milne completed the hat trick late in the third period to finish off the win.
"They're an older team, that's a playoff ready team and so it's a good lesson for us tonight," King said after the game.
"Playoff hockey is all about little battles over the ice and it's one little mistake you don't think is going to be a big one but against good teams, all of a sudden it's coming right back the other way."
Carl Tetachuk allowed three goals on six shots in 5:57 of game time before being relieved by Jackson Unger, who stopped 32 of 37 shots.
Moose Jaw was 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill in the loss.
The loss drops the Warriors' record to 35-22-3-2 on the season, but they remain three points ahead of Saskatoon for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The Blades now have one game in hand, which they will make up on Wednesday against Regina.
Moose Jaw returns to the ice coming up on Friday with a trip into Saskatoon.
The Warriors' next home action is the final home game of the regular season on Saturday when they have a rematch with the ICE at Mosaic Place. Tickets are available at mjwarriors.ca.
