
Warriors Close out Regular Season with a Win in Reno

RENO, Nev. - The Santa Cruz Warriors closed out the 2013-14 regular season with a 109-95 win over the Reno Bighorns Saturday night, securing the No. 6 seed in the NBA D-League playoffs.
Santa Cruz was led by Mychel Thompson, who tied his season-high with a game-high 22 points. Kiwi Gardner scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded a game-high four steals off the bench, while Karron Johnson scored 15 points. Seth Curry scored 14 points and had three steals, and Moe Baker dished out a game-high seven assists. In his first game back with the Santa Cruz Warriors this season, Stefhon Hannah scored seven points and had six assists.
Reno was paced by Ra'shad James, who scored 21 points and had a team-high five assists. Willie Reed, currently on assignment from the Sacramento Kings, logged the lone double-double of the night with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Tajuan Porter scored 13 points off the bench.
The Bighorns outscored the Warriors 26-9 in the first 8:16 of the game, but Santa Cruz went on a 12-0 run to cut Reno's lead to five late in the first quarter. The Bighorns extended their lead to double digits again in the second frame, but Santa Cruz responded and entered the intermission trailing by four. The Warriors went ahead 64-63 on a Kevin Kotzur running slam dunk with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter and never looked back, pushing their advantage to double digits with a 13-3 run in the fourth quarter. Santa Cruz led by as much as 17 in the final frame on its way to the 14-point victory.
Saturday's contest was the 15th game where the Warriors held their opponent to under 100 points this season. Santa Cruz held the edge on field goal shooting (46.2%-45.8%), assists (29-15), steals (15-11) and turnovers (17-25). Reno pulled down more rebounds (43-42) and scored more points in the paint (52-50). Each team had four blocks.
The 2014 NBA D-League playoff scheduling and opponents will be announced on Sunday, April 6, following the League's pick-your-opponent teleconference. NBA D-League rules stipulate that the Division Winners (Fort Wayne Mad Ants, Iowa Energy and Los Angeles D-Fenders) select their opponents for the first round of postseason play. The Warriors are in the pool of wild card teams that are eligible to be picked by the Division Winners, or if they are not selected, they will face the Sioux Falls Skyforce, which is the wild card team with the best regular season record.
