Chesapeake Baysox News Release

AKRON, Ohio - The Bowie Baysox continued the hottest start in their 18-year history with a 3-2 victory over the Akron Aeros that improved their record to 9-1. Third baseman Brandon Waring was the hero of the day with a three-RBI performance that included a two-run moonshot and a clutch single to drive in the go-ahead run late in the game.

It was the eighth consecutive win that the Baysox have reeled off, as they stand atop the Eastern League with a game and a half lead in the Western Division. Akron fell to 5-5 in third place and is now in the midst of a four-game losing streak.

Baysox starter Tim Bascom did not get off to the most auspicious start, walking the first batter he faced in the game, Aeros center fielder Tim Fedroff. Bascom tallied his first two strikeouts of the day before Fedroff got a good jump and stole second base during Matt McBride's at-bat. The steal paid off as it put Fedroff in position to score off McBride's single grounder to left field for the first run charged to Bascom this year.

The Baysox struggled to figure out Akron lefty Ryan Edell in the early going, as they went three-up, three-down through the first three innings. Designated hitter Paco Figueroa broke up the no-hitter in the fourth inning with a ground ball down the left field line for a single. Waring stepped up after Figueroa and touched off a two-run bomb to left field that caromed off the outfield concourse and splashed down in the canal outside the ballpark. It was the second home run of the year for the 2009 Carolina League MVP, who has hit 20 or more homers in each of his three pro seasons.

Bascom settled down after the opening frame and allowed just two more hits after McBride's RBI and finished the game with six strikeouts. The one run moved his ERA to 0.82 after the game.

Right hander Pedro Beato came on for Bascom to start the sixth inning and Akron pulled level when Cord Phelps knocked a long fly ball that right fielder Miguel Abreu could only helplessly watch as it sailed over the outfield wall.

The Baysox threatened in the seventh with first baseman Joel Guzman, catcher Phil Britton and shortstop Pedro Florimon loading up the bags with two outs. Akron reliever Bryan Price was able to get out of the jam when Danny Figueroa hit a fielder's choice ground ball that retired Florimon at second.

The Aeros turned the tables on Beato in the bottom of the inning, loading up the bases with two singles and a walk with just one out. A flyout to left field and a foulout gathered by Guzman allowed Beato to escape without further damage.

Bowie continued their momentum from the seventh with a single up the middle by Abreu to open the eighth. Paco Figueroa sent him to second on a sacrifice bunt before Waring came up big again with an RBI single to left field. It was the fifth run Waring drove in this year, as he moved to the top of the team RBI list.

Pat Egan took the mound with one out in the bottom of the ninth, looking to seal the win and extend Bowie's remarkable run. He got his first save of the year with two fly outs after giving up a single.

The Baysox hope to complete the sweep of their division rivals Sunday in a 1:35 p.m. game. If they get the win, it will be Bowie's first four-game road sweep since July 2007. The team then heads to Erie for a three-game set with the SeaWolves before coming back to Prince George's Stadium for a return home stand against the Akron and Erie that begins on April 22 and includes fireworks shows on the 23rd and 24th presented by Educational Systems Federal Credit Union.
