TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Reading Phillies will meet in game three of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels won consecutive games for the first time in franchise history as the club edged the Reading Phillies 2-1 on Friday night at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Craig Clark gets the start in game three of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Took the loss in his 2010 debut 4/12 at Altoona...Lasted just four innings and allowed three runs, all earned, on three hits...Walked two and struck out none...Allowed the leadoff man to reach in two of his four innings on the mound (scored once)...Both walks issued came in the first inning...Both scored on a two-out two-run single from Hector Gimenez...Gave up a leadoff double to Miles Durham in the bottom of the fourth inning...Runner scored on a ground ball to third...First regular season loss since 5/7/09...First regular season start without a strikeout since 8/30/08 (0.2 IP)...Counting last post-season, fell to 0-2 at the Double-A level with a 7.94 ERA (10R/11.1 IP) in three starts...Was 29-9 with a 3.12 ERA in 61G/58GS below Double-A.
Right-hander Drew Naylor gets the nod in game three of the series for the Phillies...Earned the win in his Double-A debut 4/12 vs. NHM...Gave up three runs on four hits in six innings of work...Struck out two and walked none...Spent all of 2009 with Advanced-A Clearwater and went 8-11 with a 4.22 ERA in 26G/25GS...Threw four complete games...Struck 115 batters and walked 37 in 158 innings pitch...Split time between Low-A Lakewood and Advanced-A Clearwater in 2008...Earned SAL All-Star honors after going 5-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 14GS...Struck out 97 batters in 87.1 IP...Went just 3-7 with a 4.85 ERA in 13 starts after his promotion to Clearwater...Spent 2007 with SS-A Williamsport and posted a 8-6 with a 3.28 ERA in 14GS...Named a NY-P All-Star...Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a non-drafted free agent March 2, 2004...Native of Brisbane, Australia...Member of the Phillies 40-man roster.
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels have allowed just one run over the last 19 innings on the mound...The staff has lowered its ERA from 3.41 to 2.75 in the process...Richmond is ranked fifth in the 12-team Eastern League in staff ERA.
ONE RUN FUN: The Flying Squirrels claimed their first one-run victory in franchise history with the 2-1 win in last night's contest...Richmond had previously dropped its other two one-run affairs (5-4, 4/10 @ BOW and 1-0, 4/13 @ ALT).
GOING STREAKING: Brandon Crawford has opened the season with hits in each of his first eight games...The 23-year-old is 10-for-28 (.357) to open the season with three doubles, a home run, one RBI and four walks...The former fourth-round pick was a 2010 Non-Roster Invitee to Major League Spring Training...He appeared in 24 games and hit .214 with two doubles, a home run, and 3 RBI...The UCLA product entered the season rated as the #9 prospect in the Giants organization after hitting .258 with four home runs and 31 RBI with Double-A Connecticut last season.
CATCH OF THE DAY: Richmond catcher Jackson Williams has hits in each of his first seven games this season...The 23-year-old is 9-for-22 (.409) at the plate with three doubles, a home run, and two RBI...He leads the team and is tied for second in the Eastern League in batting average...Williams hit just .223 in 105 games with Connecticut last season and is a career .217 hitter in 244 professional games...The Oklahoma product has also thrown out 50% of would-be base stealers (4-for-8), tops in the Eastern League.
NO SHOCKER: Wichita State product Connor Gillaspie went 3-for-4 last night with his ninth RBI of the season...It was the first three-hit game of the season by a Richmond batter...He has driven in nine of the club's 19 runs...The 22-year-old is one of five sluggers in the Eastern League with three home runs and is fourth with the nine RBI...Gillaspie hit four home runs and drove in 67 runs in 2009 with Advanced-A San Jose...The former supplemental first round pick (#37 overall) entered the 2010 season rated as the #17 prospect in the Giants organization according to Baseball America.
HORSESHOES AND HAND GRENADES: All nine games for the Flying Squirrels this season have been decided by three runs or less..A save has been recorded for the victorious team in eight of the nine...The average margin of victory/defeat is 2.0 runs (18R/9G).
FLYING SQUIRRELS FIRSTS: Roger Kieschnick's two-out, RBI triple in the bottom of the third inning was the first triple in Flying Squirrels history...Kieschnick, the #7 prospect in the Giants organization according to Baseball America, collected eight triples during his pro debut with Advanced-A San Jose in 2009.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: The Flying Squirrels had the leadoff man reach in five of the eight innings the club came up to bat...Richmond improved its batting average leading off an inning to .274 (20-for-73) in the process.
PURITAN CLEANERS DIRTY SQUIRREL: Skyler Stromsmoe was named the "Dirty Squirrel of the Game" Friday night after going 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored...It was the first start of the season for the 26-year-old.
