Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Ct. - The Sugar Land Skeeters snapped a two-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over Bridgeport at Harbor Yard in front of 2,501 fans. Chris Wallace continued his impressive streak, blasting a three-run home run and a double in the rout. In his last five games, Wallace has three long balls, five doubles and 10 RBI and has belted a home run and a double in each of his last three games. The Skeeters improve to 4-5 in the second half and 40-39 overall.
Roy Merritt picked up his third victory of the season after hurling his sixth-straight quality start. The southpaw went 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four.
Kevin Russo broke the scoring seal in the top of the fourth, ripping a two-out home run to stake the Skeeters to a 1-0 advantage. The long ball was the former New York Yankee's second of the season and first since May 17.
Bridgeport responded with a home run of its own in the bottom of the frame. Following two-straight groundouts to open the inning, Josh Prince lifted Merritt's 0-1 offering over the fence to tie the game.
The Skeeters would take the lead for good in the top of the fifth, aided by a leadoff error. Wallace reached on an error at short to open the inning and Allan Dykstra drew a walk to put the first two on for Sugar Land. Following a flyout and a strikeout, Renny Osuna singled into the alley, bringing Wallace home from second and giving the Skeeters a 2-1 edge.
Sugar Land would put up a crooked number in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach after the first four batters of the inning recorded base knocks. Russo, Johan Limonta and Delwyn Young notched three-straight singles, with Young driving in Russo, before Wallace launched his third home run in as many days, putting the Skeeters up 6-1.
Both sides would add a run in the seventh and eighth, but Ramon Delgado limited a late rally from the Bluefish, scattering a hit over the final 1.1 innings.
