Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT - July 17, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (6-2, 32-46) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (4-5, 40-39) 7-2 at the Ballpark at Harbor in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night. The loss snaps Bridgeport's winning streak at three consecutive games.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Matt Iannazzo (4-4) suffered the loss, pitching four and one-third innings, giving up six runs (five earned runs) on eight hits, walking one, striking out four, and surrendering one home run. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Roy Merritt (3-2) picked up the victory, tossing seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits, walking one, striking out four while inducing one home run.
Sugar Land took the early 1-0 lead off Iannazzo in the top of the third inning on a two-out solo home run by leadoff hitter Kevin Russo, his second roundtripper of the season. Bridgeport answered right back in the bottom of the third against Merritt when their leadoff man Josh Prince belted his first big fly of the season to left center field, also with two out and nobody on.
The Skeeters regained the lead in the top of the fourth 2-1 off Iannazzo on a run-scoring single by Renny Osuna again with two men out, plating Chris Wallace who reached to lead off the frame on a two-base throwing error by Bridgeport shortstop Matt Wessinger. Sugar Land broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits, giving them a 6-1 advantage. The big blow was a three-run home run off the bat of Chris Wallace, launching a blast into the Bridgeport night on the seventh pitch of the at bat from Iannazzo. Wallace now leads the team in home runs with 11 and RBI's with 43. Bridgeport would get to within 7-2 in the eighth inning on an RBI double by John Alonso off Merritt, bringing home Bryant Nelson. It was the third two-base hit of the game for Alonso, who is tops on the club with 41 runs batted in. Ramon Delgado would come on in relief of Merritt and close the game out, as Bridgeport fell for just the second time in ten games. Prince and Alonso led the way for the Bluefish with three hits each.
Bridgeport continues their series with the Sugar Land Skeeters at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday, July 18th on Sci-Fi Night, presented by Alternate Universe and Traynor Collision Centers, along with a post-game 3D Fireworks show. First pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
