Revs Take One on the Chin in Lancaster

July 17, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution took one on the chin in their series opener, dropping a one-sided affair to the Lancaster Barnstormers 13-0 in front of 5,236 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday night. York's modest two-game winning streak is halted, as the Revs will look to even the series on Saturday night.

York created a first inning opportunity as Eric Patterson slapped a two-out single to left and swiped his 10th bag of the season. Brandon Boggs then scalded a single to left, but it was hit too hard for Patterson to attempt scoring as the Revs' lone hit of the night with a runner in scoring position did not produce a run. Lancaster starter Bryan Woodall induced a ground ball to escape the early jam.

The Barnstormers promptly scored a first inning run of their own as Yusuke Kajimoto led off with a double to left, advanced on a groundout, and scored on a single to left by Brian Cavazos-Galvez who tallied his first hit on a 5-for-5 night.

The Revs had a chance to tie the game in the third as Mikey Reynolds led off with a single up the middle and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Wilson Valdez. Patterson then pulled a ground ball toward the hole but first baseman Mike McDade deflected it to Kajimoto on a diving attempt, as the Lancaster second baseman threw to Woodall covering. Reynolds attempted to catch the Barnstormers napping as he broke for the plate, but Woodall threw home to complete the bizarre double play.

Cavazos-Galvez took advantage of the short porch in right field, lofting a solo homer on the first pitch in the bottom of the third to make it 2-0.

Lancaster chased Revs starter Frank Gailey with three consecutive singles with one out in the fifth. The Barnstormers added to their lead as reliever Eddie Medina, making his Atlantic League debut, issued a wild pitch to plate a run. Kent Matthes then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, as the margin grew to 4-0.

Gailey (1-2) was charged with four earned runs over 4.1 innings, after entering Friday's game having allowed just one earned run in his first 16.1 innings with York.

The Barnstormers pieced together another two-run inning in the sixth. Luke Hughes reached on a strikeout-wild pitch to begin things while Keith Castillo drew a walk. After an Anderson Feliz sacrifice bunt, Kajimoto lined a sacrifice fly to left and Zach Collier sliced a bloop RBI single to shallow left-center, upping the lead to 6-0.

Castillo provided an RBI single to right field in the seventh, before the Barnstormers erupted for six runs in the eighth against lefty Javier Machuca, also making his Atlantic League debut. Four consecutive singles ignited the eighth-inning rally with Matthes driving in a run on the fourth of those hits. Lance Zawadski also drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Hughes whipped an exclamation mark on the proceedings with a grand slam to dead center field.

Woodall (3-4) was stellar, working eight scoreless innings and allowing six hits, all singles. He walked none and struck out four, retaking the league lead in strikeouts (73). It marked his second straight scoreless outing, both against York, after going six shutout innings at Santander Stadium on Sunday.

Scott Gracey struck out the side in the ninth, issuing just a two-out walk to Bryan Pounds, his league-leading 38th.

Notes: Lancaster takes a 10-9 lead in the season's "War of the Roses" series, gaining the edge for the first time this season. Pounds, Nick Ferdinand, and Andres Perez all had five-game hitting streaks snapped. Perez remains tied for the Revs all-time hits record with 383, having matched James Shanks with a hit in Thursday's game. Woodall has allowed a combined 11 hits (all singles) and no walks while striking out 12 batters in 14.0 innings over his last two starts, both against the Revs. The shutout is the first suffered by the Revs since June 10 vs. Lancaster. With a pair of debuts out of the bullpen, the Revs have now used 51 players this season. York lefty Logan Williamson (3-6, 3.69) faces a Lancaster starter yet to be announced on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:40 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
