Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Third baseman Neil Walker belted two home runs and drove in five, while starting pitcher Brad Lincoln allowed just three hits over six scoreless innings of work to lead the Indianapolis Indians to a 12-0 trouncing of the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.
With the win the Indians improve to 67-67 overall and 32-36 on the road, while the Mud Hens fall to 68-66 overall and 37-31 at home with the loss. The win for Indianapolis gives then both a 2-1 advantage in the current series and a 9-8 lead in the season series.
The Tribe jumped on the Mud Hens early and never looked back as they plated two runs in the second, three in the fourth, fifth and sixth and capped the offensive blowout with a single tally in the eighth. Every Indians' batter reach based at least once, while five collected multi-hit performances, four scored multiple runs and three posted multiple RBI.
Walker had a night to remember for the Indians, as the switch hitting slugger belted a two-run and three-run long ball, scored three times and tied current Pittsburgh Pirates' OF Garrett Jones for the most RBI by a Tribe hitter in a contest this season with five. With his offensive outbreak, Walker now leads the International League with 29 RBI in the month of August, the most by any one player, on any team, in any month, in the International League this season.
However, Walker wasn't the only Indianapolis' batter with a monster night at the plate as LF Brian Myrow went 2-for-4 with four RBI, including a three-run long ball to deep right field in the sixth inning. With his excellent effort at the plate, Myrow has now reached base in 16 of his last 17 contests, during which time he is batting .426 (29-for-68) with 15 runs, four home runs and 18 RBI.
While Walker and Myrow led a powerful Indians' offensive attack, Lincoln anchored the Tribe pitching staff that held Toledo to just three hits on their way to their seventh shutout of the season. Lincoln (6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO) was in control all night long as the hard throwing right hander allowed just three hits and stuck out six on his way to his sixth victory of the season.
Following, Lincoln's dominant performance, relievers Corey Hamman (2.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Juan Mateo (1.0 IP, 1 SO) combined for three hitless frames of work out of the Indianapolis' bullpen to seal the victory for the Tribe and in doing so allow Louisville to clinch the International League West Division crown for the second consecutive season.
Other Indians who collected multi-hit games in the blow-out victory, included RF Jose Tabata, who went 2-for-6 with two runs scored, DH Larry Broadway, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored, 1B Tagg Bozied, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two walks and SS Argenis Diaz, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI. The two base knocks for Tabata broke him out of a 2-for-23 slump as he turned in his first multi-hit performance since August 21 , while the multi-hit effort for Broadway broke him out of his own 3-for-22 slump and gave him his first contest with multiple base knocks since July 18.
For both Bozied and Diaz their multi-hit efforts continued each of their recent offensive breakthroughs as Bozied extended his hitting streak to six games during which time he is batting .428 (9-for-21) with six runs and five RBI, while Diaz extended his hitting streak to four games, during which he has posted a .470 (8-for-17) batting average with four runs and four RBI. Bozied has also now reached base in 23 of his last 25 games, raising his average of 80 points during that span, while Diaz has now driven in multiple runs for the second consecutive game and just the second time in his Triple-A career.
Overall, it was a night of domination for the Tribe as they also roughed up Toledo starter and 12-game winner Ruddy Lugo (4.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO) for five runs on seven hits in just four innings to drop him to 12-9 overall this season.
Indianapolis looks for the series victory as they wrap up their four-game series at division rival Toledo on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. RHP Daniel McCutchen, who is looking for his International League leading 14th win of the season is scheduled to start for the Indians, while RHP Dontrelle Willis is expected to get the nod for the Mud Hens.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 5:40 p.m.
