Norfolk Tides News Release

Josh Kroeger's two-run homer highlighted Charlotte's 11-hit attack in a 6-2 victory over Norfolk Saturday night at Harbor Park.

Kroeger's fifth inning blast broke a 2-2 tie and came off of Tides starter Jake Arrieta, who fell to 5-7 after yielding four runs - two earned - on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. The rocky outing put an end to a strong stretch of starts for the 23-year-old Arrieta, who had gone 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA over his previous four appearances.

Charlotte starter Jake Peavy, who was making his fourth rehab start with the Knights, worked 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four. The 2007 NL Cy Young award winner exited the contest in the fifth inning for precautionary measures after experiencing tightness on his right arm in the same area in which he was hit by a line drive during his previous rehab start on August 24 at Gwinnett.

Norfolk plated both of their runs off of Peavy in the fifth inning, courtesy of a two-run single by Brandon Pinckney. Pinckney had three of Norfolk's seven hits in the contest and is now batting .290 on the season.

Kelvin Jimenez (5-3) earned the win for Charlotte with 2.1 shutout innings of relief.

The Tides and Knights will continue their four-game set on Sunday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park scheduled for 6:15. Left-hander Chris Waters (9-5, 4.19) will take the mound for Norfolk against southpaw Wes Whisler (9-11, 4.35).

On Sunday the Washington Redskins cheerleaders will perform prior to the game, courtesy of ESPN Radio 1310. The first 5,000 fans will also receive a photo of Jake Arrieta, courtesy of ESPN Radio 1310, Bank of the Commonwealth and The Grate Steak.

Tides Transaction: Just prior to Saturday's game the Orioles traded Norfolk outfielder Joey Gathright to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Gathright had hit .329 with 24 stolen bases and 20 RBI in 80 games with the Tides this season.
