Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - A four-run 10th inning rally by the Clinton LumberKings on Thursday night at Ashford University Field was enough to drop the Burlington Bees in walk-off fashion for the third time in the series. In a game dominated by pitching the LumberKings (24-20) rode their largest inning, four runs, in over a week to take the series from the Bees (19-25).
Ray Kerr started for Clinton and turned in his second straight quality start holding the Bees scoreless over his six innings of work while allowing four hits on one walk and striking out seven.
Kerr's opposite number, Simon Mathews matched him over his five innings of work for Burlington. The Bees starter did not allow a hit while walking two and striking out five.
A game dominated by pitching was taken over by the offense in the later frames. The LumberKings broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Joseph Rosa doubled high off the wall in right for Clinton's first hit of the night and scored two batters later on an Ariel Sandoval double to left.
The LumberKings took their 1-0 lead into the ninth after Scott Boches turned in two perfect innings of relief in which he struck out five of the six batters he faced.
In the top of the ninth, the Bees rallied to tie the game. A leadoff single by Zane Gurwitz was quickly followed by an RBI double from Harrison Wenson to left that tied the game at one.
Burlington then put up three runs in the top of the 10th off LumberKings reliever Marvin Gorgas. Leonardo Rivas drove home the first run with a double and Gurwitz the lined an RBI triple to right center field for the second run. Franklin Torres capped the rally with an RBI single off Gorgas (2-0) to make it 4-1 Bees.
Clinton then came roaring back against Bees' reliever Jorge Tavarez in the bottom of the 10th. Eugene Helder singled to open the inning to put runners at first and third with nobody out and moved to third on Sandoval's second run scoring double of the night. Ryan Costello then doubled into right center field to tie the game at four. Dimas Ojeda drove home Costello from second with a one out walk-off single to right against Tavarez (2-4).
The LumberKings will now hit the road for the first of six games with the Cedar Rapids Kernels starting on Friday night. Clinton will throw left-hander Oliver Jaskie (1-4, 5.45) for the series opener while the Kernels will tap lefty Bryan Sammons (0-3, 2.91). Fans looking to listen to the call of the game can hear Erik Oas at 6:35 PM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI to being at 6:20 PM.
