Bees Fall in Extras in Series Finale vs Clinton

Burlington, IA. - The Burlington Bees (19-26) suffer another walk off loss in the series finale vs the Clinton LumberKings (24-20), falling 5-4 in ten innings. Burlington had a good top half, scoring three runs and taking a commanding 4-1 lead, but Clinton's offense came alive in the bottom half of the tenth, to take the series three games to two. Marvin Gorgas (2-0) won his second game of the season, despite allowing two earned runs in the top of the tenth. Jorge Tavarez (2-4) suffered his fourth loss and blowing his second save of the season.

Both clubs struggle to find offense in regulation

Clinton managed just one run in the first nine innings, scoring in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Ariel Sandoval. For Burlington, their lone run came in the top of the ninth on Harrison Wenson's first double of the season, tying the game 1-1. Clinton went just 5-13 with runners in scoring position, left ten runners on base, and struck out nine times in the game. Burlington went just 3-15 with runners in scoring position, left nine runners on base, and struck out 16 times as a team.

Scoring picks up in extra innings

Jeyson Sanchez was the place runner in the tenth for the Bees, and Leonardo Rivas drove him in on a one out RBI double, giving the Bees a 2-1 lead. Zane Gurwitz stepped up next and delivered a triple to right, easily scoring Rivas and giving the Bees a 3-1 lead. After a walk from Wenson, Franklin Torres drove in his 21st run of the season on a single to left, giving the Bees a 4-1 lead. Clinton got out of the inning, after striking out Kevin Williams Jr looking, and getting Spencer Griffin to fly out.

Although Burlington had a good offensive inning, Clinton would retaliate to secure the win. Joseph Rosa started the inning at second as the place runner, but would advance to third right away, after Eugene Helder drove an 0-2 pitch to left for a base hit. Ariel Sandoval stepped into the batter's box, and hit his second double of the game, scoring Rosa and advancing Helder to third, cutting the Bees lead to 4-2. After a mound visit, Ryan Costello hit his 14th double of the season and driving in his 27th and 28th run of the season, tying the game at 4-4. Tavarez would get Johnny Adams to ground out to short for the first out, but next batter Dimas Ojeda became the third LumberKings player with a walk off hit this week on an RBI single, giving Clinton the 5-4 victory.

Looking Ahead

After an eight game road trip, Burlington will be back home tomorrow, to begin their four game series against the Beloit Snappers. Burlington will be going with their ace Luis Madero in the series opener. Madero is 1-2 with a 2.40 ERA with 22 strikeouts this season. Beloit will be going with Jared Poche', who is 1-2 with a 3.78 ERA this season. Tomorrow is also half way to Halloween night at the ball park, all kids dressed up get free admission into the game. There will also be a costume parade, and lots of prizes to give away including, gift cards, water park passes, and much more.
