Knoxville Smokies News Release
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Doug Deeds came through when it mattered most Friday night. The Tennessee Smokies outfielder's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth capped a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Mobile BayBears Friday night at Smokies Park. The win keeps the Smokies (33-28) no worse than one game back of West Tenn in the North Division, with only nine games to go.
Presented with an early 1-0 advantage, Tennessee starter Chris Carpenter did his very best to protect the Smokies' early lead. He worked very efficient and aggressive, going six innings and throwing 41 of 66 pitches for strikes. He had two strikeouts and allowed only one run.
That run came on a Ricardo Sosa RBI double in the sixth, but Mobile could have had more if not for some great defense by the Smokies. On Sosa's double, Pedro Ciriaco attempted to reach home from first on Sosa's double. Smokies LF Ty Wright threw a strike though to SS Starlin Castro. Castro, on the relay throw, gunned down Ciriaco at the plate to hold Mobile to only the one run.
Tied in the seventh, Mobile would go up 2-1 on a bases-loaded walk by Smokies reliever Jayson Ruhlman. The Smokies bullpen would give up no more runs, setting the stage for the exciting finish.
Trailing 2-1 in the ninth, Ty Wright led the inning off with a single to left off of Mobile reliever Reid Mahon (5-2). Two batters latter Tyler Colvin came through in the clutch, smacking a double that would score teammate Ty Wright. Doug Deeds would come up to bat next to pinch-hit for pitcher David Cales. After working the count full, Deeds took Mahon's offering down the first base line to end the game.
Tennessee continues their five-game series against Mobile Saturday night at Smokies Park. Jeremy Papelbon (5-5, 3.03) will go to the mound for the Smokies against Tom Layne (0-2, 4.09) for the BayBears. Tickets for those games can be purchased at www.smokiesbaseball.com, by calling (865) 286-2300, or at the Smokies Park ticket office.
