Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - The M-Braves got out to a 4-0 lead Friday night, before giving up the lead through the middle innings. They rallied late to pick up the win on a walk-off sac-fly from Brandon Hicks.
The M-Braves got a little help from the D-Jaxx in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Young and Brandon Hicks hit back-to-back one-out singles to get the inning going. They executed a double steal to move up a bag and Young scored on a wild pitch by Robert Rohrbaugh.
Mississippi helped itself in the second. With two outs in the frame, Travis Jones and Nate McLouth drew back-to-back walks. Young then belted his fourth home run of the year to give the M-Braves a 4-0 lead. It was only the Braves third three-run home run of the season.
The D-Jaxx got on the board in the fourth. Callix Crabbe and Rich Poythress drew back-to-back walks to start the inning and they moved up a base on a wild pitch. Crabbe then scored on a sac-fly by Travis Garcia to cut the lead to 4-1.
West Tenn tied it up in the sixth. They got a sac-fly from Jose Yepez to cut the lead to 4-2 and they tied it on Greg Halman's third home run.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. Travis Jones drew a lead-off walk and Willie Cabrera was hit by a pitch to put the winning run in scoring position. Matt Young reached on a bunt single to load the bases and Brandon Hicks hit a sac-fly that scored Jones from third with the game-winning run.
Tim Gustafson had a strong outing for the M-Braves. He gave up a run on four hits in five innings, but didn't factor into the decision. Steve Marek gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning and Kevin Gunderson threw 2.1 scoreless innings. Craig Kimbrel threw a shutout ninth to pick up his second win of the season.
Robert Rohrbaugh gave up four runs in four innings and failed to factor in the decision. Mumba Rivera threw two scoreless innings and Kyle Parker tossed two shutout innings. Anthony Varvaro gave up a run in the ninth to fall to 4-3 on the year.
The Braves and D-Jaxx play game two of this five-game series Saturday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. The M-Braves will send righty Kyle Cofield to the hill against West Tenn's Luis Munoz.
Saturday will be Sam's Club Promotional Night as the Braves celebrate the grand opening of our newest neighbor. It will also be Mayberry Night when the Mayberry Deputy, Opie, Floyd, Goober and Otis look-a-likes will be in attendance. In addition, fans can bid on fabulous Braves memorabilia at the Saturday night Silent Auction.
