Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biscuits came from behind to defeat the Carolina Mudcats, 3-1, in the opener of a five-game series on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Mudcats got on the board first against Biscuits' starter Aneury Rodriguez in the second inning. Shaun Cumberland led off the inning with a single back up the middle and promptly stole second base. He advanced to third on a ground out from Carson Kainer and came in when Logan Parker sent a swinging-bunt in front of the mound which Rodriguez attempted unsuccessfully to come home on, and the Mudcats had a 1-0 lead.

Carolina starter Luis Montano was sensational through six innings, holding the Biscuits scoreless on just two hits. However, he walked Cody Cipriano to start what turned into the decisive rally for Montgomery in the seventh inning. Cipriano advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored to tie the game when Jose Castro threw wildly into the stands on a routine ground ball from Matt Fields. A batter later, Fields scored on a sacrifice fly from Cody Strait, and the Biscuits had a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Montano (0-6) departed, and took a hard-luck loss, having allowed just two unearned runs on two hits. Ruben Medina entered and the Biscuits capped the scoring as Medina hit Jason Bowers with his first pitch. Bowers stole second base and came in on an RBI double for Rashad Eldridge.

Rodriguez (9-10) departed after seven innings, and was the beneficiary of the Biscuits' outburst in the seventh. He earned the win, conceding just four hits and a lone run, walking three and striking out four.

Heath Rollins worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Matt Gorgen earned his third save, turning in a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the comeback win.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium. LHP Ryan Morse (3-6, 5.26) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Jerry Gil (2-3, 9.39) for Carolina.
